Counseling
Many of the women we serve are trauma survivors. If they haven't suffered trauma, they certainly have struggled with the challenges of homelessness, single parenting and financial distress. With that in mind, and knowing they need as much support as possible to move forward in their lives, we provide each woman with weekly high-quality, on-site counseling by certified therapists.
In addition, we offer bi-weekly group counseling at each site. This isn't “traditional” group therapy, where women talk about their own personal issues in a group setting. Rather, the focus of these groups is to give women tools to help them handle the critical challenges of communal living, handling different personalities and styles and learning how to diffuse potentially problematic situations.
For several years we have been fortunate to partner with Samaritan Counseling Center to provide these services at West Chestnut Street. At South Christian Street, the counseling services are provided by Nancy Elkin MSN, CS, who has extensive experience in this field and who has gained the deep respect and trust of all our residents and staff since she joined us at the beginning of 2009.
