Milagro House Lancaster PA

Resident Evaluations

At the beginning of each year, in order to evaluate the progress made by the women who have left Milagro House in the previous twelve months, our staff spends a day reviewing the records of the women who are no longer residents. Over the years, we have discovered a direct and very positive correlation between the number of months a family resides at Milagro House and the measurable progress the mother has made in changing the negative behaviors that had led to her homelessness.

Nearly 30% of the women who come to us because they have no safe place to live with their children are not able to make it through the initial evaluation period (two months or so) once they do become residents of Milagro House. Our program is rigorous and geared to women who are ready to make a sincere commitment to changing their lives and the futures of their children. There is a significant number of women who can not or will not do the work necessary to remain at Milagro House and most of them leave within the first two months of their stay. Some of these women return to become successful Milagro House residents months, or even years, later - when they are ready.

After we are able to truly assess a woman’s education, work experience, ability to support herself and parenting, she is assigned a level, from one to eight, that reflects where she is when she arrives at Milagro House. For example “Level 1” indicates that she has little schooling and no job history. A woman starts at a “Level 4” if she has graduated from high school or has her GED and some work experience. Women who stay in the program from six months to two years or longer generally advance on our scale and are assessed again once they leave the program. “Level 6”, indicates that a student is attending school at the post-secondary level and has had at least one successful job experience. A woman who leaves Milagro House with a “Level 8” has completed a degree or certification program, has a job that pays a living wage and is moving into permanent housing.
